Kinja'd!!!

My company is willing to pay 500 euros of travel expense and supply room and board, to fly to Austria to race go karts on the Red Bull Ring. I WANT TO GO! But... the event starts May 8th and my finals run through the 9th. I would have to leave the 7th to make it on time which would mean I miss potentially 3 days of finals. I am going to try and see if I can get finals moved due to work reasons...

This doesn't affect me at all but you've somehow ruined my day.

That is a tough one. School first and I'm sure you know that most professors arent going to have much sympathy for a freshman. Good luck though!

Yeah, I know :( I just really want to go! And it truly would be for work purposes because I would go visit their world headquarters and stuff. Wish I just knew what to do in this situation

I would very, very tightly wrap it in the fact that you are being invited to a major corporations headquarters and the are willing to pay your way. I wouldn't so much mention the carting.

Oh of course! Karting and tours of the RBR are just bonuses! I don't know how I would go about figuring out the school situation to begin with though I have to reserve a seat by february so I must figure out my finals stuff before that. Also, finding flights to Austria for under $1000 is hard!

I think most professors would be flexible.

Also, there's a probability you won't even have finals scheduled on one or two of those days.

Indeed, it's a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Hopefully I'll only have like one final those days like I did this semester.

Find your councilor and talk with them. That's what they are for. It is a great opportunity and Purdue tends to be a little friendly toward that kind of thing. If you get really stuck for a ticket let me know. I may be able to help with a standby ticket as far as Germany. I don't think we fly to Austria, but I could be wrong. Standby is cheaper than full price, but there is a risk that you wouldn't get on. That said, you would be better off if you can buy positive space.

Talk to your counselor or adviser or whatever your school calls it. When discussing the possibility of the trip with them let them know it is for work purposes, and emphasize how it is related to your field of study. I would advise talking to your adviser first as they will have insight as to how to approach your profs and if you've articulated how this helps your education they may be willing to help you work with profs on any scheduling conflicts. If talking to your adviser and profs directly fails, go to the undergrad department head. In all of these conversations make sure you emphasize how the trip will help your education and career advancement.

That being said, don't you already have your finals schedule available? They should have all been scheduled prior to class registration to make sure you don't have conflicts between classes anyway so you should know if you have any finals on the days you would have to be gone.

Thanks! I think that will be the path I take. I'll talk to my counselor soon as I can. I know when the week is, I don't know when the individual tests are.

Good luck and hopefully your profs will work with you to reschedule any finals that need to be moved. If you go we will expect a mega photodump, full trip report and samples of Red Bull (I prefer Blue Edition).

If I get to go, I will, don't trust me. I would even take it as an excuse to bum around europe for a few days if I can find cheap travel and a place to stay.

Places to stay in Europe aren't unreasonable if you look around. B&B's and small mom & pop hotels are all over and are reasonably priced. The big chain hotels are spendy though. Fuel and food are very expensive though. From what I gather you can get around by rail pretty cheap, but when I've been to Europe we've rented cars because of not having definite plans and needing to get to various ski resorts. If you get the chance to go do it. The experience is awesome and I had a great time when I went.
